What is depression? Depression can be described as feeling sad, blue, unhappy, miserable, or down in the dumps. Most of us feel this way at one time or another for short periods. But true clinical depression is feelings of sadness, loss, anger or frustration that lasts for weeks or longer and interferes with daily life. It can also lead to feelings of utter despair and thoughts of just ending it all.

Many feel that talking about it and sharing how you feel with friends or family is taboo. Or maybe they just won’t understand or will judge you. But statistically and without going into massive detail, the prevalence is higher that you think in adults.

Bringing awareness to mental health and depression is not an easy task when people don’t talk about it. But, we are getting better and closer to making it a non-taboo subject. Take Christina Kim, and LPGA Tour Player. She has chosen to step out into the world and discuss openly about her struggles with depression. This may be considered a giant leap, but Kim has chosen to put a name and face on the illness.

I commend her for her courage, strength and commitment to helping others understand that sometimes one needs help. If she can help just one person with her open discussion about her struggles, then she has probably saved a life. Thank you, Christina Kim, for putting yourself out there to the world.
