Golf News: D.A. Points Gets Win in Texas and Invite to The Masters
In golf news today, D.A. Points made a par putt of just more than thirteen feet on the 18th hole to claim victory in the Shell Houston Open after a nearly three hour rain delay. Points picked up his second career victory with a 16-under par 272 total score after a bogey-free final round 6-under 66.
With his second career victory on the PGA TOUR, Points picks up 500 Fedex Cup points and an invitation to the Masters in two weeks.
Billy Horschel (66) and Henrik Stenson (66)finished one shot back at 15-under 273. Stenson also earned a berth in the Masters as he climbed into the top 50 in the OWGR.
Dustin Johnson (65) and Ben Crane (68) finished T 4th at 14-under 274.
Brian Davis (67), Kevin Chappell (68) and Stewart Cink (70) finished T 6th.
Points’ victory marks the 14th consecutive victory on the PGA TOUR by an American this year.
After missing the cut in seven of nine starts this year, Points was a most unlikely winner in an event viewed by many as prep for the Masters. Even more unlikely is that Points was using a putter once used by his mother which he stole from her when he was eleven years old.
“She was back home in Florida yelling at the TV about as loud as I was on the putting green.” Points said shortly after draining his winning putt.
An early run at the leaders was made by Phil Mickelson who opened the day with four straight birdies to get within two shots of the lead. Lefty’s rally stalled with eight straight pars and then a three-putt double bogey at the 14th hole.
