Clothing Review: Bobby Jones Apparel
“Oh, uh, it’s the pleats… the pleats in the pants. It’s an optical illusion. I was just about to take them back… to the pants store. Oh this is embarrassing.”
I have found that there are 3 different styles that golfers embody. There are those that are pure casual that will put on any pair of pants (jeans/khakis depending on course rules) and any polo shirt available. There are those that like a sportier look with more subdued tones and performance driven apparel. And lastly, there are those that go on the basis that you play as good as you feel and feel great dressing to the traditional styles of the game. I, myself am a sportier type of golfer. I like to keep to a neutral foundation to my clothing with a few colorful accents. Grey slacks with a grey shirt and red or orange off-set tones are my comfort zone.
The lovely folks over at Bobby Jones Golf sent us over a generous amount of clothes to get our thoughts on how they do for a golfer on and off the course.
“Bobby Jones embodies the modern country club lifestyle. It’s a new take on a grand tradition: the best of classic, American, luxury products for the contemporary lady and gentleman.”
Quality, class, and a modern lifestyle is the direction Bobby Jones apparel are looking to represent and that is exactly what they have done. Let’s get to the heart of the matter with what it all boils down to.
How does it look and feel?
I was sent a couple of different items including polo shirts, pants, shorts, a pullover, and a sweater vest. To start, all of the clothing had a luxury quality to them. What I mean by this is that not only are the materials made of the finest cloth but there are attentions to detail that really make the brand stand out.
The polo shirts were not necessarily my cup of tea. I am not a big fan of bright, pastel colors nor do I favor a shirt that has a slight sheen to it. Aside from my personal preferences on color, I really like the overall look of these shirts. They really show the quality of materials that were put into it and the Bobby Jones embroidery between the first and second buttons is a really nice touch. The shirts were very comfortable and breathed extremely well.
The pullover and sweater vest are going to also fall into the same realm of color issues for me. I can probably get used to a purple pullover as it isn’t too far of a stretch to combine with a grey slack and the look of it is really nice with the stretch knit cuffs that really provided a new level of comfort. I was very happy to wear the pullover through a full round and had no restrictions in my swing. The vest, however, was too much color for me to handle. There are a few color choices but pistachio green didn’t suit my tastes. With the vest, the fit was also an issue. I typically wear a L/XL shirt and an XL vest was very baggy and just didn’t sit right on my body.
Last but not least, the pants (and shorts). I was really impressed with the quality of these pants. Bobby Jones sent a flat front trouser that is just about half cotton, half tencel. The sizing was fairly accurate but a little tight in the rear-end (or it could have been the dinner I had eaten right before trying them on). This is easily remedied when ordering as there is a nice level of custom measurements you can provide to fit your body. The looks and feel were really nice as they embodied a classic khaki with a superb comfort that I will continue to use on and off the course.
The shorts sent were white, flat front and quite comfortable. Once again, a larger size may be warranted as these were a tad tight in the seat but still very flexible for any level of course activity. My only gripe is that the cloth used is a little thin and thus when in a white they have a hint of transparency. Maybe I should consider an alternative to my “I <3 Harry Arnett” boxers? Too soon?
All in all, Bobby Jones apparel is a high quality, luxurious line of clothing meant for any level of golfer. If you favor bright colors and great feeling materials then this is surely a product for you. However, keep in mind that with luxury items come luxury prices.
