With Scott Stallings and Kyle Stanley both making runs at Matt Kuchar, then Kevin Chappell, Kuchar kept chugging along and pulled off the victory at the Memorial.
“This stuff never gets old,” a beaming Kuchar said as his sons, Cameron and Carson, were in his arms. “To shake Mr. Nicklaus’ hand, to win the tournament, that’s pretty great. But to have my family run onto the green, this is as special as it gets.”
Kuchar is now a multiple winner this year on Tour along with only one other player, Tiger Woods. Speaking of Tiger Woods, he had a very rough time at the Memorial this year. We all know of Tiger shooting his worst 9 holes (44) in his PGA Tour Career in round three, but things weren’t that much better in the final round. Woods could not seem to break par and ended with an even par 72 in the final round, finishing 65th. Tiger’s worst finish at the Memorial was 67th.
Kuchar ended his nice run at the Memorial with a 4-under-par 68 Sunday to win at Muirfield Village.
“Winning tournaments breeds more winning tournaments. Anytime you can get comfortable playing in that final group, finishing off a tournament, winning a tournament is a huge amount of confidence,” Kuchar said. “I think last week was helpful playing in the last group at Colonial. I played some good, steady golf, not quite good enough. But having that opportunity again the very next week, I felt good out there. I knew my game was in good shape and was a lot more comfortable in the situation.
“Heading into Merion, I’ll have a lot of confidence. It’s a course I’ve not seen before, so I’ll have to do some learning. But from what I understand you’ve got to drive it well, as you do in a U.S. Open, and I feel like I’ve been really driving the ball well. I’m looking forward to my chances there at Merion.”
Before this tournament you could say that Tiger Woods was the hottest player in golf, but now I think you have to say Kuchar is the hottest player. Next week should be some fun golf.
