The New Ping S55 Irons Review: Feel and Workability
It’s been over three years since PING has released new blade-style irons. This is because the last ones, the S56 irons were so good. PING takes pride in their engineering and are not going to release a product unless they see a drastic improvement over the last one. [new_royalslider id=”112″] [divide] Soon, the wait will be over. The S55 irons are being released on November 1st and they are divine. So divine that Bubba Watson who has played the same style irons since 2004 is switching to them.

PING took their already great S56 irons, made some tweaks and impressed their tour players. The change to a thermoplastic elastomer material of the Custom Tuning Port (CTP) insert absorbs more vibration making the impact feel softer. The CTP is larger and sits deeper in the back to enhance launch and the face is thinner to increase ball speed that adds distance.
Looks:
The S55 irons are more beautiful than Holly Sonders on the cover of the May issue of Golf Digest. They look incredible! They’re compact with a thin top line and a finish of brushed satin-chrome that screamed confidence. The bottom groove is painted white and helped me line up my shots. There is not a single thing that I can gripe about in regards to the looks of these clubs.
Feel:
Yes, I love the looks, but I also love the feel of these irons. Soft is what I want when I hit iron shots and that is what I got. The two major things that helped with the soft feel were the Custom Tuning Port and the Cushin Filtering Insert in the CFS steel shaft. Together, they reduced the harsh vibrations of impact while still giving me positive feedback. http://youtu.be/RdiO8bOfwS0
Performance:
This set performed just as well as they look and feel. For a player’s iron, they were very forgiving, but didn’t lose the workability. I loved the nice high trajectory I had without the ball ballooning. I could hit fades, nice little draws and the distance control was spot on. The S55’s are some of the best irons that I have ever hit.
Final Thoughts:
The engineers at PING have done it again. They made something great, greater. If you are a low-mid handicapper, I highly recommend you checking out the new S55 irons. They are truly something special.
