I know that there are tons of articles and videos on how to hit the flop shot….but why are people still so afraid to try it? It is a great shot to have in the bag for situations with very little green to work with. Well I am going to make it nice and simple so you have less to think about.
1) Set up with a wide stance (and get LOW).
2) put the ball just inside your front heel at address.
3) Put 70% of your weight on your front foot.
4) Open the club face.
5) The ONLY thing that should be on your mind when hitting this shot is SWEEP THE LEG! That’s it. Take the legs right out from under the ball.
Very often folks have a hard time with the flop shot for fear of skulling (or thinning) the ball. I will tell you why steps #4 and #5 will help. When you open the club face you raise increase the bounce on the back of your wedge by a lot! Therefore, it becomes near impossible to hit the shot fat. If you only focus on making sure you hit the ground under the ball (aka. “sweep the leg”) then you will find a lot of success with this shot.
Get out to your course and practice this shot to get the feel of how hard you need to swing to get the proper results. When used properly, the flop shot can help you tackle quite a few daunting obstacles on the course.
