Golf History Being Made: Nicklaus, Watson, and Others Set to Play Par 3 Course

If you’ve been getting tired of the same ol’ same ol,’ the Champions Tour has good news for you. From June 2nd-8th on the Big Cedar Lodge Resort’s Par-3 Top of the Rock course, the PGA Tour, for the first time in history, is sanctioning an event featuring, yes, a par-3 course. The Legends of Golf Tournament draws exactly what the name says, the legends many golfers grew up with, including Hale Irwin, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, and Gary Player.

“It will help tell the story why alternative facilities can be used to bring more people into the game of golf. It will play a prominent role in growing the game of golf,” said PGA Tour commissioner Tom Finchem. While developing countries have the space and excitement to grow golf, our beloved game is, sadly, not growing nearly as quickly in the United States. It’s just calm waters for the golf industry right now, and stirring up the pot has been a priority of the PGA of America for quite some time.

The Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus, noted, “As an industry, we need to come up with new golf experiences, whether that is 60 minutes or 90 minutes, whether it’s six holes, 12 holes, a par-3 course. We need to think in terms of shorter, faster and more fun.” The course is around 1,500 yards with the short 2nd hole measuring only 70 yards and the longest third hole reaching 240 yards.
