Mizuno Hyper Rain Jacket and Pants Review | Slick and Smooth

Review by Staff Writer Stephen Davis:

Living in Oregon proved to me that few things are as valuable to a golfer as a good set of rain gear. What makes rain gear good? First and foremost it needs to keep you dry, what good is it if you finish the round wet. Second on my priority list is that it needs to be flexible. I have had rain gear that is completely water tight, yet it is very hard to swing in. Third, it needs to look good. I’ll discuss each of these points. Here is what Mizuno has to say about the Hyper Rain Gear.

“10,000 mm water protection 15,000g/m2 breathable. Soft touch, ultra lightweight waterproof jacket in micro fiber triple bonded woven fabric. Japanese super thin membrane provides lightweight performance. Loose liner allows movement against bare arms when worn directly over a base layer.”

Look and Fit

The looks of this rain gear is very slick. I have the white one and the white with the red stripe down the back looks really nice. The jacket runs slightly small, so I would err on the larger size when ordering. According to the fitting guide I should fit a medium, however, the medium was definitely too small. The large size fit me just right and looks great and nicely fitted, while still giving me room to swing. The pants run true to size as I was recommended to get a large and the large was the correct size. The pants are slightly more baggy in the legs than I prefer, but they do have straps to tighten them around the shoes. The pants also have a neat feature that allows for the length to be adjusted, which is a feature I haven’t seen on other rain pants. This decreases the chance of having pants that fit in the waist, but that are too short or too long.

Feel

This is one of the best feeling rain jackets and pants that I have used and I have used several. There is little to no stiffness in this jacket which really frees you up to make a good swing. I have worn this with and without a base layer and it is very comfortable both ways. The material is soft and the liner in the inside feels good against the skin. Coming from a rain suit that is nearly bomb proof, but difficult to make a free flowing swing in, this jacket is a huge improvement.

Performance

This is the real crux of the issue. Like I said before, it is all well and good if a jacket looks nice and feels good, however, if it doesn’t keep you dry then what is the point? I am happy to report that this jacket kept me very dry during my round. I played in a decent rain storm with this stuff on and I stayed completely dry. The gear also is great at blocking out the wind, which can be a big problem where I live. Although, i was impressed by how the rain gear worked, I wanted to see how it would stand up to serious amounts of water, so after my round I headed into the clubhouse and turned in the shower and hopped in. This shower has front facing shower heads as well as one from the top. I turned it up full blast and I can tell you that I left that shower dry as a bone. The performance of this rain gear is excellent!

Pros

  • Extremely waterproof
  • Comfortable
  • Easy to swing in
  • Lightweight
  • Stylish
  • Pant length can be adjusted

Cons

  • The pants are baggier than I would prefer

Summary

I came away very impressed with Mizuno’s Hyper Rain Jacket and Pant. They are extremely waterproof, very lightweight and easy to swing in, all while managing to be goo looking. Mizuno has a clear winner I their hands.
