2014 Cobra Bio Cell+ Plus Driver Review: Technicolor Technology

[new_royalslider id=”30″]

I returned to golf back in 2005 after a long layoff.  On our way back from a night out with my wife I noticed a driving range on my way home and had to stop. The head pro said that he highly recommended the new Cobra 454 Comp driver and less than ten minutes later my love for the game of golf was reborn.

For 2014 Cobra Golf has introduced the Bio Cell line as a replacement to the outgoing and somewhat successful Amp Cell driver.  Talk to anyone that stepped out of their comfort zone that actually gave the Amp Cell a shot and you will more than likely hear the praises.  Cobra has managed to remain one of leaders in distance while still maintaining maximum forgiveness.

The 2014 Bio Cell + keeps some of the benefits of the Amp Cell and ZL line but has added both minor and major tweaks to validate an upgrade.  Cobra developed an alloy that sounds straight out of a comic book called Venollum.  What this has allowed them to do is decrease crown weight, lower launch angle, and lower spin compared to the standard Bio Cell and past models. The E9 face technology has been paired with Bio Cell Speed Pockets to reduce weight and provide longer, straighter, and faster drives even on off-center hits.  MyFly with SmartPad is back allowing for eight different lofts, 8 degrees to 11 degrees and draw settings in 8.5, 9.5, 10.5, to maximize distance and trajectory.

FORGED E9™ BIO CELL FACE

New BiO CELL pockets combined with E9 Face technology removes weight from the face to deliver a larger effective Sweet Zone™ with faster ball speeds for longer and straighter drives – especially on off-center hits

MYFLY8 WITH SMARTPAD™ TECHNOLOGY

Eight adjustable loft settings to maximize distance and manage trajectory for any course condition and any swing.

ULTRALITE T.O.P. TECHNOLOGY

(THIN, OPTIMIZED, PERSONALIZED)

Lightweight Venollum™ alloy crown reduces weight vs ‘all titanium’ drivers to deliver a lower CG for a higher ball flight with lower back spin for longer distance.

So in a year where the trend has been lowering the CG and moving it forward. Cobra was able to not only lower spin and control flight, moved CG closer to neutral axis and slightly farther back, but they also saved MOI.  Genius!

Let’s get to the bottom of this multi-colored driver known as the Cobra Bio Cell + Driver!

Looks:

This has never been a strong suit for Cobra. It has never had anything to do with how the club sets up or crown design. The majority of golfers will not play a colored driver, period! That’s why the welcome addition of a black head should satisfy most of the players out there. Why most and not all? There is a small white outline that could still be too much.  To be honest the orange head I received would not of been my first choice but after some customizing with an orange grip, I really could care less and that white outline is a great contrast to the black face. The 440cc is very traditional and at address is absolutely perfect.  I have yet to find someone who didn’t like the look of the Bio Cell + down by the ball. MyFly blends very well into the head and doesn’t appear at all bulky.

Feel:

For reference some of my favorite feeling drivers were my Cobra 454 Comp and in recent years the R9 Superdeep. Both of these drivers had titanium faces and were louder than most airplanes.  The Cobra Bio Cell + is the complete opposite. If for some reason you liked the sound of the version Mark Crossfield hit you will be disappointed with your experience. The Bio Cell plus has a very nice and subtle ping. I find feel to be very good on center strikes and slightly above average on mishits. Meaning that while you know you mishit the ball it’s not punishing. I’m an audible player and if they could give me a bit more of a ting it would make the Bio Cell + perfect. Get on that Cobra!  I didn’t get along with the stock Matrix Red Tie. Our demo came with a stiff flex in 62 grams. While I do play a stiffer shaft the issue was with the weight. I just couldn’t get a feel for the head. I’ve reshafted with an 80 plus gram shaft and the change has been night and day.  To be fair most of the golfers I let hit the driver really liked how the Red Tie performed.

Performance:

The Cobra Bio Cell + is a game changer!  I was a bit alarmed at the ball flight being so high, for me, even when set on 8 degrees. What I have later noticed both on course and on the range that like the SLDR the low spin causes the shot to flatten out and hold it’s apex for what seems like an eternity. Not only am I getting more carry there is also some serious roll.  Cobra would have no problem with a distance challenge by fitting golfers properly versus their old driver.  I’m no stranger to driver fittings and have fought this higher trajectory, low spin craze, no more!  Cobra really has something with the CG placement and their Ultralite T.O.P. Technology. By not having to place CG all the way forward M.O.I. has been maintained and I’m seeing more drives staying in the fairway even with the usually more demanding 440 CC head.

Overall:

I’m back to where my golfing craze started. Playing a Cobra driver again for the first time in many years. The Bio Cell + has to be considered one of the best drivers of 2014. It would be a shame if an aversion to colored drivers keeps golfers from experiencing all of the technology that has gone into this club. I would highly recommend players of all handi-caps look at the whole Bio Cell line.

The Cobra Bio Cell + comes in a variety of head colors and retails for $399. The stock Matrix Red Tie is the real deal and you can also upgrade to the shaft of your choice.

As always I would like to thank our loyal readers and of course Cobra Golf for this awesome opportunity!
