How to Throw a Charity Golf Tournament for the Special Olympics
The second annual Bunkers Paradise Golf Tournament was held this June and the pressures to step it up after a fantastic first tournament were certainly felt.

On an absolutely gorgeous Sunday afternoon in sunny Southern California, a crew of over 100 players, staff and supporters came out to the beautifully manicured golf course in Yorba Linda called Black Gold Golf Club!
The day started off with registration and raffle ticket sales at the front of the club house and with the awesome help of Pin-Up Golf, we were able to exceed expectations with sales of our raffle tickets and mulligan packages! I mean, who would want a piece of a Palm Springs getaway, drivers, wedges, putters, apparel, books, hats and even a complete set of irons? (I told you we had amazing sponsors, but keep on reading before you scroll to the bottom to see who they are!)
After getting all their paper work done, the players were welcomed to an all you can hit driving range to meet the rest of the competition and Golf Channel’s Big Break star, Fiamma Felitch.
To add to the fun, we had the players try their hand at what we liked to call the Barrel Chip. Basically, we put a plastic bin out on the driving range at about 60 yards and dared any one to chip it in to win a Taylormade SLDR Driver. It didn’t matter if you chipped it in off a bounce or threw it in, you just had to get your ball in that bin. No one was able to meet the challenge! The bright side is all that chipping practice must have helped the teams with their game because there were some insane scorecards turned in at the end of the day!
So next, there was a putting challenge hosted by the Pin Up Girls, where they basically set up a 30 foot snake of a putt for a chance to win a Taylormade Wedge. They tried to ease the tension with white picket fences and tree bushes, but let’s be honest, it didn’t really help.
Next up is tee-time at about 2p with all our teams playing in a standard scramble format. Upon playing the course, the teams were going to find a number of challenges/competitions in their way:
- Longest Drive Competition
- On the Green with the Pin Up Golf Girls
- Dixon Par 3 Golf Ball Challenge
- Beat the Pro (Our Very Own Kate Hughes)
- Closest to the Pin
- Guess the Drive with the Pin Up Golf Girls
- The Bubba Drive
Once everyone wrapped up their round, they grabbed their grub and took their seat for the reception where we announced the winners of the tournament, contests and raffle giveaways.

Most importantly, we were able to hear from Joseph Gorin who recently won the Betty Belden Palmer Award for Outstanding Athlete of the Year. Joseph reminded everyone of what they were participating in and how their efforts will contribute to the efforts of the Special Olympics of Southern California.
After raising a little over $3000 last time, we were proud to announce that this year’s Bunkers Paradise Golf Tournament was able to generate $5000 for the Special Olympics of Southern California.
Remember, I told you about our amazing sponsors,? Well, without their continued support, we would have never been able to make this type of contribution to the Special Olympics.
Here they are and our own Kate Hughes even made a special video for our hole sponsors:
