“Swing harder. Swing slower. Keep your left arm straight. Keep your head down. Straighten your back. Cock your wrist. Close your stance. Open your stance. Drive your hips.”
These are all various tips and pieces of advice I’ve heard during my 13 year recreational golf career. Nowadays, in our age of social media, golfers can soak in endless swing tips trying to achieve the “perfect” golf swing.
How does anyone know what’s actually right?
That’s where the Jay Lim Golf Academy comes in.
Meeting the Man
I had the pleasure to personally meet with Jay Lim, founder of the Jay Lim Golf Academy in Fullerton, CA. Jay and his team teach golf based on the principle of achieving a biomechanically efficient swing, a perfect ideal swing based on biomechanics and physics. Jay has created a roadmap for his students to learn focusing on many different individual elements such as grip, posture, setup, contact, direction, distance, consistency, position, and rhythm.

My first thought when I heard about this system was that it must have been something that Jay had developed through many years of experience and research. That wasn’t the case. Jay told me he had recently started golf from scratch just NINE YEARS AGO.
Having a history of elite human performance (he went to the Olympic trials for archery and set high jump records in high school), Jay was confused as to how he could not figure out the golf swing. He was receiving lessons from a number of instructors and was receiving different information even though he was the common variable to all of them. Jay soon dropped his instructors and took on the task of figuring it out alone.
After thousands of range balls, the light bulb came on and the idea of a biomechanically efficient swing was born. He took time to apply his idea to perfect his swing and soon shot par within a year of picking up a golf club!
Jay was soon coaching and teaching the principles of his golf swing to golfers of all levels, from recreational players to aspiring professionals. He also began to develop and train others on his system and the Jay Lim Golf Academy was created.
Currently, there are 4 other instructors aside from Jay who have been rigorously trained on how to teach the system. Whether you are receiving instruction from Jay or any of the others, the same information is being taught. There are a variety of packages available to golfers of all levels, from beginners to professionals. There is even a package that helps you become a single digit handicap within 13 weeks!
The Miracle Worker
The Jay Lim Golf Academy offers 15 minute evaluations known as 15 Minute Miracles, where Jay and his instructors evaluate and fix a part of your swing within 15 minutes. Of all the things I wanted to improve on, I chose to have Jay look at my swing with the driver, specifically for accuracy.
I stepped up to the range and immediately started hitting a few balls to the right, where I usually tend to miss with my driver.
After watching me hit a few, Jay explained some very simple changes in my setup in relation to the position of the ball to my left foot and how far I was standing from the ball. Rather than just telling me what to do, he explained why I needed to make these changes and how they would affect the ball during my swing.
I hit a few more with these minor changes and the shots were immediately going straighter. Afterwards, Jay applied the first big change and noticed that I tend to swing up through the ball, which led to a very high ball flight. He explained that I need to swing through the ball similar to a baseball swing, which would flatten the ball flight. Within a couple swings, the ball was going straighter with even more distance.
He literally fixed it and had performed this miracle in 13 MINUTES!
Jay even added to it and gave me a tip to add more distance to my drive. I tend to have a very “armsy” swing where I swing with my arms rather than my lower body. He gave me a simple drill to keep my left arm connected to my body while I swing through the ball with my lower body, where the bigger muscles are. Next, he noted the position of my left wrist at impact and how I needed to straighten it. Within the next couple shots, I was hitting my drive 20 yards farther and straight down the middle!
Next, we took a look at video of my swing side by side with a biomechanically efficient swing. Since an efficient swing is based on straight lines, Jay drew lines to point out the differences between an efficient golf swing vs. my swing. I could immediately see the difference in relation to my backswing, spine angle, and head position.
I wanted to know so much more!
I was amazed at how simply Jay was able to explain why I needed to make these changes. He didn’t use any complicated biomechanical terms to explain anything and put things in very easy relative terms that anyone can understand. I was astonished as to how quickly and simply he was able to make such a big change to my swing with immediate results.
We wanted to thank Jay Lim for letting us hang out for the day and introducing us to a great new way to learn the golf swing.
