A Game for Life DVD Review: Lessons From the Black Knight
Every once in a while we realize that our clubs don’t help us much in improving our game if they don’t come with a swing. Some people improve by taking lessons, spending hours on the range, some just by playing 18 holes 3 times a week… and some… well, they need a role model or someone to look up to. We read books and watch endless videos on YouTube searching for the perfect swing or drills to help us drive the ball straight. We love to follow great players and more often than not we try to mimic them. We look back in time to people like Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan for answers. One thing that is true is that we love and have great respect for those who came before us.

Also known as the Black Knight, Gary Player has created a series of videos to help bring some answers to the world of golf from his perspective. Player is determined to give the player a snapshot of what it takes to improve your game and your lifestyle, that is if you consider yourself a golfer. If you ever wanted to have a golf mentor, but were never sure on who to trust, consider the fact that this man has won 9 major championships and has one more professional golf tournaments around the world than any other player in history. He pioneered fitness in golf by taking it to the next level; longevity. This man can shoot in the 60s at 78 years old.
There are other instructional videos out there, but what sets this one aside from the others is presentation. The collector’s box set looks classy and clean. It would make a great gift that anyone would be more than proud to display. You’re probably wondering what this dvd is all about and its contents, so let’s walk through it together.
3 DVD Set
Disc 1: Sand Play
I was surprised to see that the first video is about sand play. Why? Well for once, we know Gary Player is known to be one of the greatest players out of the sand that ever lived. He is a strong believer that there has not been great players who could not get out of the beach to save their life. If you have a solid game out of the bunker chances are that your short game, long game and putting is on mark as well. Gary Player goes on to show the viewer how to tackle every lie possible in the sand and how to hit it close. These include side hill, down/uphill lies, thin lies and the famous fried egg. So, instead of heading out to the golf course to encounter these scenarios that lead you to start reinventing the wheel, the best thing to do is to follow the advice of this great man.
Disc 2: Short Game
The second video goes over the short game. Gary player keeps this simple by showing you how to hit pitch shots and chip shots. The biggest takeaway from the second volume is how to practice and warm up. Gary player goes on to show what methods he personally uses to warm up. Gary Player is a 100% feel player. He puts a great emphasis on tempo, posture and balance. A feel player is 10 times more dangerous on the course than someone who is obsessed on the mechanics of the swing. His advice here will help you bring more feel into your game and become an instinctive player.
Disc 3:
The 3rd volume of the series revolves around how to take not just the game of golf for the long haul, but a healthy lifestyle as well. We get an inside look at Player’s love for the game, his fitness regime and his diet. This man is full of energy and an incredible role model to those conscious about their health
Overall:
Gary Player: A Game for Life is all about taking you back to the basics. It will not overwhelm you with information you’re gonna forget the next time you’re out on the course. This is not to say that everyone should follow Player’s methods, some people enjoy creating their own swing and practice to what they feel helps them the most. Everyone is different, so there aren’t any absolutes. Nevertheless, this is a fun series to watch and you might pick up a few tips that can help your game. If you’re a fan of Gary though, I can assure you that this might turn into a movie night every Friday.
