DraftKings Fantasy Golf Recap: Season’s Last Major Pays Off

The season’s final major was one of the record books — and one that Jason Day will never, ever forget.

After half a dozen close calls in his first handful of years on the PGA Tour, Day finally has a major championship to his credit — and one DraftKings’ user has a million bucks in their bank account.

Sadly, the end of golf’s major championship season also means we now have to wait little more than eight months until the next opportunity to claim a DraftKings’ $1 Million prize at a major.

Here’s a look at the week’s fantasy performances — the good, the bad and the ugly:

The Good

Jason Day – Ho hum, another major championship, another great performance by Jason Day. This time, however, it was special. Jason Day captured his first career major championship, doing so in record fashion becoming the first player to ever finish a major at 20-under par for the week.

For fans of Day who, like Day himself, have waited and waited for him to come up big and close out a major had their moment on Sunday as Day collected his first major championship title. Along the way, he made fantasy managers very happy.

Day’s final line: 37 PAR, 25 BIR, 2 EAG, 7 BOG, 1 DBB, 1 WINS, 3 BIR3+ and 1 A4U70 for 149 fantasy points

Justin Rose – Another guy who has quietly had a great major season in 2015 is Justin Rose. The former major champion collected his third top-1o in a major for the year on Sunday with an impressive final total of 14-under par.

It wasn’t enough for him to collect major championship No. 2., but it was a great performance nonetheless that made his DraftKings managers very happy and helped make at least one a millionaire!

Rose’s final line: 39 PAR, 25 BIR, 5 BOG, 3 DBB and 1 4th for 105 fantasy points

Brendan Grace –  I said it in June at the season’s second major and I’ll say it again — look out for Brendan Grace. If you’re buying golfer stock, you need to take a look at Brendan Grace. For the second time this season, the South African almost stole the show on Sunday at a major.

Just like in Washington in June, it was one bad hole on Sunday that did him in. Going forward, you’ve got to like Grace’s chances over the next few years. You don’t fluke into top-5’s in majors more than once.

Grace’s final line: 43 PAR, 23 BIR, 4 BOG, 2 DBB, 1 3rd, 2 BIR3+ and 1 BOFR for 113.5 fantasy points

The Bad

Louis Oosthuizen – When you think of the 2015 major championships, a name that keeps popping up is Louis Oosthuizen. That’s for good reason — considering he’d collected two runner-up finishes coming into last week’s last major.

Unfortunately, the South African was never able to find the gear his DK owner’s wished he would have and stumbled to a four-over, mid-pack finish.

Oosthuizen’s final line: 49 PAR, 14 BIR, 8 BOG, 1 DBB and 1 31st-40th for 63.5 fantasy points

Danny Lee – One of the most popular picks coming into the season’s final major was Danny Lee. Unfortunately for users, it wasn’t a great week for the rising young star.

That’s a bit of a disappointment considering nearly 15% of DraftKings users took the flyer on Lee. It wasn’t really a bad week, just a bad round that landed Lee on this list — but you can’t shoot 77 on Friday and expect big things on Sunday.

Lee’s final line: 41 PAR, 18 BIR, 11 BOG, 1 DBB, 1 DBW, 1 41st-50th and 1 BIR3+ for 71 fantasy points

The Ugly

Zach Johnson – Coming into the week in Wisconsin, Zach Johnson was high on the list of almost everyone, thanks in part to his incredible performance at the Open Championship. Couple that with a lower-than-normal price tag, and he was a hot choice for sure.

Which is why his performance at the season’s final major was so damn depressing. Johnson was owned by a staggering amount of  owners — needless to say, that’s a lot of disappointed managers. Surely he’ll shake off the loss, but it doesn’t make the week any easier to swallow.

Johnson’s final line: 19 PAR, 7 BIR, 10 BOG, and 1 BIR3+ for 28.5 fantasy points

Jimmy Walker – A guy that people keep taking thinking he’s bound to win a major at some points is Jimmy Walker. But the guy hasn’t even played well in majors, really, so I’m not sure why Jimmy Walker keeps getting picked. I guess the shine of five PGA Tour wins is just too much for some people.

This past week at the season’s final major was just another example of why to avoid Walker in majors, as he could only muster 23.5 fantasy points and missed yet another cut.

Walker’s final line: 21 PAR, 6 BIR, 8 BOG and 1 DBB for 23.5 fantasy points
