Tiger Woods did not pick up the win on this weekend, but the PGA Tour and the fans should feel like they had a huge victory. As many are aware, The Valspar Championship at the Copperhead Course is not known for being one of the top tournaments on the PGA schedule. The tournament in Tampa felt very relevant this weekend and the guy in red and black can be the one to thank.
Woods shot a one-under on Sunday and ended the weekend at nine-under par. He finished at a tie for second place behind Paul Casey, who finished one shot better at ten-under par. It took a great round by Casey to capture his second win on the PGA Tour. Golf fans were hoping Woods could pick up the win, but they should be excited for what he might be able to do throughout the year.
The leaderboard was filled with top players on Tour. Patrick Reed had a great chance to win outright, but was unable to birdie the last hole and ended up making bogey. He finished in a tie for second with Woods. Sergio Garcia had an excellent Sunday, shooting six-under and finished solo fourth. Justin Rose started the day at eight-under, but couldn’t get things going and ended the weekend in a tie for fifth along with Rory Sabbatini.
There was definitely a huge buzz coming out of Innisbrook this weekend. Tiger Woods had flashes of his old self. If you combine that with the win by Phil Mickelson the weekend before and all of the young guns playing well, the PGA Tour is in a great spot. The Masters Championship couldn’t come any sooner.
