Can Steve Lewton Follow in Richard Bland’s Footsteps at Foxhills?

Steve Lewton is poised to make a significant impact at the International Series England this week at the Foxhills Club & Resort in Surrey. Now 41 years old, Lewton has been a staple of the Asian Tour since earning his card through Q-School in 2012. With recent strong performances, including a fourth-place finish at the International Series Oman and a top-five at the Volvo China Open, he is eager to continue his upward trajectory.

Reflecting on his career and inspiration, Lewton looks to golfer Richard Bland, who, despite being ten years his senior, has achieved impressive milestones, including back-to-back senior major titles this season. Lewton notes, “Looking at Blandy, and how he’s played makes me think maybe I have got 10 really good years left as I’ve started playing better in my late 30s and early 40s. Blandy has 10 years on me, so hopefully, I can continue on that upward trend and do something similar.”

Lewton acknowledges that age has become an asset rather than a hindrance. “Ten years ago I would have probably said it was a disadvantage. But as I have played better later in my career, I would probably say age is an advantage to me now. I have a lot more experience playing in different places, and maybe the best way of describing it is that I am playing because it is fun, almost trying not to ‘care’ too much,” he remarks.

Lewton’s performance in recent tournaments highlights his readiness to challenge the leading names this week. Competing in the International Series England, part of the pathway to the highly coveted LIV Golf League, offers Lewton a critical platform to advance his career. His ultimate goal is clear: “My goals this year are to win again. I feel like I have been close the last couple of years and I feel like my game has really been trending in the right direction. So I am really looking forward to this back end of the season. We can get a good run of events going and take some form into them. My ultimate goal this year is to give myself the best opportunity to get to LIV. That is my ambition at the moment so I’m doing everything, turning every stone, to try and get the best form and play to my full potential. I would suggest that a lot of players on the Asian Tour would dream of getting to LIV.”

The international event, which runs this week, is one of ten designed to open doors for players aspiring to join the LIV Golf League by the season’s end. For Lewton, competing on home soil adds an extra layer of motivation. He will face an elite field, including heavyweights such as Dustin Johnson, Cam Smith, Phil Mickelson, Xander Schauffele, and others. Nevertheless, he embraces the challenge, stating, “I think the biggest part of playing in a field like that is that generally you play better when you play with better players – you up your game. You concentrate on what makes you play better. The injection of the LIV Golf League players on The International Series makes our field better and that’s only a good thing as it helps the Asian Tour players to play better.”

Lewton’s relaxed yet focused mental approach underpins his recent success. He views his participation as an extension of his passion rather than pressure. His perspective, combined with his vast experience, could be the formula for unlocking further victories. Lewton adds, “We can get a good run of events going and take some form into them…turning every stone, to try and get the best form and play to my full potential.”

This week’s International Series England represents not just another tournament for Lewton but a crucial step towards achieving his broader professional aspirations. The blend of seasoned experience and ambition could lead to remarkable outcomes and potentially a fresher chapter in his evolving career.
