Hideki Matsuyama Dominates Opening Round in Paris Olympic Golf: Secure Lead With Stunning 63

The men’s Olympic golf event commenced at Le Golf National in Paris on August 1, 2024, drawing over 20,000 spectators despite interruptions due to storm warnings. This marked the opening of an intense competition as players from around the world vied for Olympic glory.

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama emerged as the early leader with an impressive eight-under-par 63. His round showcased remarkable accuracy and skill, marked by six birdies in the first ten holes. Matsuyama’s round also included a notable save—a 15-foot par putt on the 17th. Reflecting on his performance, Matsuyama remarked, “Fortunately, I was able to keep the ball in the fairway and left myself with a number of chances to score. I’m satisfied with the end result, but there are still a number of things I can improve on. It’s a great start and hopefully I can keep the momentum going for the rest of the week.”

Hot on Matsuyama’s heels was Xander Schauffele of the United States, the defending Olympic champion. Schauffele shot a solid 65, placing him two strokes behind Matsuyama. Despite not having the start he envisioned, Schauffele maintained a positive outlook, stating, “It wasn’t sort of the dream, stripey start that you envision as a golfer. But I’m happy to sort of ride the ship in and get away with what could have been worse. I missed a few putts coming in. But it’s Thursday. I’m not really sweating it too much.”

Several other players also showcased strong performances on the first day. Joaquin Niemann from Chile, Emiliano Grillo of Argentina, and South Korean Tom Kim all posted scores of 66. Not far behind, American Scottie Scheffler scored 67, tying for sixth place. Other notable players included Rory McIlroy and Ludvig Åberg, both of whom finished with a score of 68. Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm, Sam Valamaki, Sepp Straka, Alex Noren, Ryan Fox, and Erik van Rooyen each turned in rounds of 67.

France’s Victor Perez had the honor of hitting the opening shot at 9 AM, buoyed by strong home support. However, not all players had a favorable day. Team GB’s Matt Fitzpatrick struggled, finishing with a score of 73, placing him tied for 49th. Meanwhile, Colombia’s Camilo Villegas faced significant challenges, ending the day with the highest score of 76, marred by four bogeys and two double bogeys.

Overall, the first round saw 41 out of 60 players finish under par, aided by rain-softened greens that created favorable scoring conditions. The stage is set for an enthralling week of golf, with Matsuyama aiming to build on his early momentum and others poised to make their moves. As the tournament progresses, the anticipation only heightens, promising a closely contested battle for the coveted Olympic medals.
