Nick Watney Takes Lead Heading into Final Round at AT&T Invitational

A record setting third round by American Nick Watney has made him the front-runner heading into the final round of the AT&T National. After starting Saturday’s third round tied for 21st Watney shot an impressive -8 to overtake previous leader K.J. Choi.

Choi, who was the clubhouse leader after Friday’s second round, shot a -1 on Saturday to put him at -8 for the tournament. He was also passed by another American, young Rickie Fowler. Much like Watney, Fowler had an impressive third round to put him in contention for the championship heading into Sunday’s final round. Starting the day tied for 10th, Fowler shot -6 on Saturday to jump Choi and sit at the top of the leaderboard tied with Watney.

Another impressive performance on Saturday was Webb Simpson, who also made an impressive run to put him in the front of the pack heading into Sunday. Simpson, who began the day tied for 21st with Watney, shot -6 on Saturday to put him at -7 for the tournament. This puts Simpson just one shot back of Choi and just two shots back of leaders Watney and Fowler.

Simpson’s not alone at the fourth spot, however, as there are two others who finished the third round at -7. Simpson’s fellow American Steve Marino and Australia’s Adam Scott are both sitting at -7, and are in prime position to take home the championship on Sunday.

Defending champion Justin Rose is currently tied for 20th at -3.
